How Wondrous is Thy Love

How wondrous is Thy love for me! So near and yet so vast
Both tangible today and through the ages standing fast

Both certain and mysterious, both clear and yet unseen
Demanding all, yet giving all—yea, so Thou art, my King!

So gen’rous, yet insistent; purely free yet firmly strong
This love brings lords to shame and tears, yet gives the poor a song

Thy love couldst fair condemn us, yet ’tis in Thy love we live
‘Tis just to show our faults, though ever faithful to forgive

As gentle as a brook, yet crashing mightily as waves
Misunderstood by men of wisdom, yet revealed to babes

In love Thou heedest prayers, and in love doest Thou ignore
Our pleadings when we beg for what we should not ask Thee for

Thy love we could not limit, yet obeyeth love Thy law
So strictly covenantal, yet not tamed by men at all

Thy love alone couldst break my heart yet mend it at one time
Both test our depths, yet comfort—both bring pain and joy sublime

Thy love is great! Yet love became as frail as men of dust
The day Yeshua came—Thy love in flesh—our God with us!
